Community Radios campaign against COVID-19

Community radio broadcasters across the world are risking their lives to be at the service of their communities. In the Asia-Pacific region, community radios in Australia, Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Nepal, New Zealand, Philippines, PNG, South Korea, Timor-Leste, and several other countries are working hard to ensure that appropriate and adequate information is received by the listeners so that they can fight back the pandemic. By serving the emergency information needs of the most vulnerable, community radios are trying to help millions that are at high risk.

AMARC Asia-Pacific is launching the “Community Radio Campaign against COVID-19” to complement the initiatives of community radios across the region. In the beginning phase of the campaign, we will make available researched and verified messages that community radios can easily translate and broadcast as short announcements (PSAs).

In addition to the messages, we will make available useful resources that community radios can refer to strengthen their work against the pandemic.

In this emergency phase of the pandemic, AMARC Asia-Pacific is focussing on messages that are short and simple to understand. As the pandemic situation evolves further, we will work with community radios to develop diverse kinds of radio contents.

Our aim is to contribute to community radio impact in supporting the most vulnerable

Vulnerable populations facing the COVID-19 outbreak include anyone who is:

an older adult
at risk due to underlying medical conditions (e.g. heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, chronic respiratory diseases, cancer)
at risk due to a compromised immune system from a medical condition or treatment (e.g. chemotherapy)
Anyone who has:
difficulty reading, speaking, understanding or communicating
difficulty accessing medical care or health advice
difficulty doing preventive activities, like frequent hand washing and covering coughs and sneezes
ongoing specialized medical care or needs specific medical supplies
ongoing supervision needs or support for maintaining independence
difficulty accessing transportation
economic barriers
unstable employment or inflexible working conditions
social or geographic isolation, like in remote and isolated communities
insecure, inadequate, or nonexistent housing conditions

Our aim is to contribute to community radio impact in building resilient communities supporting the most vulnerable

The challenge is to include marginalized and vulnerable people in risk communication and community engagement
Women, the elderly, adolescents, youth, and children, persons with disabilities, indigenous populations, refugees, migrants, and minorities experience the highest degree of socio-economic marginalization. Marginalized people become even more vulnerable in emergencies. This is due to factors such as their lack of access to effective surveillance and early-warning systems, and health services. The COVID-19 outbreak is predicted to have significant impacts on various sectors.
