Poverty Alleviation & Community Development

The program aims to empower local communities to develop pathways to overcome the worsening poverty situation due to the prolonged Covid-19 pandemic. The program addresses the role of media particularly CRs in supporting the marginalized local communities in the fight against pandemic-induced impoverishment through inclusive community radio programming.

Poverty reduction has been one of AMARC Asia-Pacific’s overarching priorities for many years, and the Covid-19 pandemic has given it new urgency.

The program was implemented in four countries – Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, and Nepal. The direct beneficiaries of the project are the community radio journalists from the selected community radios of the four countries while the indirect beneficiaries are the listeners.

The program has helped (a) enhance the capacity of the journalists of the community radio stations; (b) inform them about the economic consequences of the COVID 19 pandemic in their region; (c) promote active participation of community members in radio programme production, and (d) produce and broadcast radio programmes that address the urgent needs of the local population.

According to the World Bank, Extreme poverty in low-income countries has rapidly increased, setting back progress by eight to nine years. Globally, three to four years of progress toward ending extreme poverty are estimated to have been lost. And, through this program we seek to support community radio stations in designing programmes that alleviate the pandemic-induced impoverishment in their communities.

This program is kindly supported by the Catholic Media Council (CAMECO).
